Thanks, Dad

This weekend, we have the privilege to celebrate all the fathers among us. One Bible verse about fatherhood I always remember is found in the book of Malachi.

Malachi 4:5-6 tells us about how God will send His prophet Elijah to preach His message that will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.

Let’s face it, dysfunction within families is common these days. Being in the ministry, I’ve encountered many people suffering from fractured relationships in their family, particularly with their fathers. I believe this is something that breaks the heart of our Heavenly Father. In fact, Malachi 4 ends off with God’s displeasure at this.

But this is something that’s very real in families today. I definitely don’t have a broken relationship with my dad, but with any relationship, there will always be problems. Yet, it’s not the problems that define our relationship, but our love for one another. I may not be the perfect son, and my dad may not be the perfect father, but this I know – we’re family, and we’ll always love one another.

Today, why don’t we speak a word of blessing to our fathers? It doesn’t matter what your relationship with him is like. Even if it is fractured, why not take the first step to bring about reconciliation? It doesn’t have to be anything mushy. Just talk.

To my dad: I want to thank you for being my dad. We may not be perfect, but I know you love me a lot. Thank you for giving me one of the greatest gifts ever; thank you for believing in me.
