Pass It On

Greetings from Sentul, Indonesia, where Senior Pastor Lawrence and I are attending the Empowered21 (E21) Asia Congress. As I meditated on E21’s tagline, “Serving a Movement, Empowering a Generation”, God reminded me of our responsibility to our next generation. Psalm 78:1-8 makes it very clear – “O My people, listen to My instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past — stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about His power and His mighty wonders. For He issued His laws to Jacob; He gave His instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them — even the children not yet born — and they in turn will teach their own children. So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting His glorious miracles and obeying His commands. Then they will not be like their ancestors — stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God.”

It takes a village to raise a child. FCBC, the responsibility is ours to carry the baton of faith and the knowledge of our God and His Word, and eventually pass it on to the next generation. As verses 2-4 says, I pray that the “hidden lessons from our past” and “stories [from] our ancestors” will be revealed by the Holy Spirit to us at the right time. So, we can “tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about His power and His mighty wonders.” Moses also taught this to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 4:9, “do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

Dear family, we can and we will influence our future generations by living for Christ today. I believe we are alive in such a time as this so that we can be the spark that ignites the flame in the hearts of our next generation. Let’s make it our prayer to be faithful in passing on our faith to the next generation – be it our children, our children’s children, or any other from the next generation.
