Happy Mother's Day

It is a great privilege and responsibility to be a mother. No one has a more profound and enduring influence upon those around them than a mother raising her children in the fear and wisdom of the Lord.

One good example of this is the life of Timothy. Apostle Paul referred to Timothy as being “faithful in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 4:17). Timothy’s faith was no mere dry creed; it was not just an outward show of piety. He did not ‘do church’ for appearance’s sake. His faith in the risen Christ could endure persecution and suffer loss; he could live or die for Christ with the sure hope of eternal life. Apostle Paul had the highest confidence in Timothy’s fine track record as a Christian worker, as he wrote, “But you know that Timothy has proved himself” (Philippians 2:22).

This was all because Timothy had a firm foundation, established by his grandmother and mother since young. Apostle Paul affirmed this in 2 Timothy 1:5, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” Timothy’s grandmother and mother were staunch believers who taught him the Scriptures from his earliest childhood years (2 Timothy 3:15). Apostle Paul exhorted Timothy to “continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it” (2 Timothy 3:14).

How often Christian mothers have been used by God to raise up sons and daughters for the ministry of God’s church!

I want to thank the mother of my children, Nina, for shaping the lives of my children. You have made an indelible impact in all of their lives – physically, emotionally and spiritually. You are truly the wise and virtuous wife spoken of in Proverbs 31: “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.’ Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

May the women of FCBC be like you. Thank you, Nina, and I love you.
