God's Relentless Pursuit

This weekend, we wrap up our final message in our short series on the book of Jonah. It truly has been a fun journey for me as I took a more in-depth look at this book.

While short, the book of Jonah really helped me to know God and understand myself better. Jonah’s story screams of God’s relentless patience towards us and shows us a reflection of our own lives through Jonah. Often, we too become like Jonah, having to deal with our own disagreements and disobedience towards God. We run away in the opposite direction, yet we still find God one step ahead of us.

This really reminds me of that song we sing, “Extravagant”. The lyrics tell us that how much God loves us really doesn’t make sense to us, and how we can never really comprehend it. Think about it – Jonah abandoned God, tried to get as far away as possible from Him, but God never gave up on him. God continued to pursue Jonah and did not for a moment write him off. That’s really something that doesn’t make sense to us. In chapter 4, Jonah talks about God’s love and compassion in regard to Nineveh, but I believe he himself had forgotten that the same love and compassion were things that he needed too.

As we go through the book of Jonah, I pray that we take back just how much God loves us and is willing to pursue us. Today, don’t turn away from God. Run to God instead. Love Him, serve Him, and honour Him in all that you do.

“For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
- Psalm 103:11-12
