CANCER MINISTRY

Pastor-in-charge: Rev Richard Ong

Cancer Ministry, a ministry under FCBC, aims to provide support for cancer patients and their families through its strong network of committed and trained volunteers, financial assistance, recovery programmes and support groups.

Cancer Ministry has been actively involved in the lives of cancer patients by providing care and support for the past seven years. Its volunteers are either cancer survivors or family members or friends of cancer patients. In order to continue with its mission of touching lives, Cancer Ministry needs financial support from the community so that it can reach out to more cancer patients.

Let's hear more from Dr Karmen Wong, Consultant Oncologist and a volunteer of TCM:

"In my years as a doctor caring for cancer patients, I have come to realise that treating cancer is not just about treating an illness. A diagnosis of cancer is devastating for the patient as well as his entire family. The needs of the patient and his family are great. Cancer often hits the person unexpectedly and the very word itself strikes fear in all. There is fear not only of the disease but also of the treatment that follows.

In treating a cancer patient, we need to look after not only his disease but also his long-term emotional needs. Researches indicate that the patients and their loved ones suffer significant levels of distress. Very often, cancer patients experienced a deep sense of helplessness. He becomes acutely aware of not being able to control or predict one's future or destiny. When confronted with a cancer diagnosis, the patient and his family often experience feelings of disbelief, shock and despair. The fear of dying, pain, mutilation or disfigurement and loss is common among patients."
